What to Expect
Pushing through the door of a new church can be intimidating. We have all been there. That is why Smithfield United Church of Christ believes in giving all visitors an extravagant welcome and making your visit as pleasant as possible.
An extravagant welcome
When passing the peace and welcoming newcomers, expects a bit more than a discreet hand shake from the person nearest you. In fact, expect a series of handshakes and a little commotion as we make our way through the aisle to warmly greet one another.
Sermons that speak to you
Sermons are what we all look forward to in a worship service. It is a time to dig a little deeper into the scriptures and reflect upon our lives. For these reasons, we keep our sermons real, unearthing truths and challenges we face in our lives, and using real-life examples.
An amazing choir
We don't mean to brag, but we have the best choir in town. We do! From soprano to bass, our singers cover the entire vocal range coming together in beautiful harmony. Come and hear it for yourself. We promise, you will not be disappointed.
A place for your kids
During our 11 a.m. worship hour, we provide a staffed nursery for infants through two-years-old. Following the Talk with Children near the beginning of our service, children in grades K-5 are invited to join our Pilgrim Adventures Church School Class. In addition, during winter and summer, children may also enjoy participating in Camp Downtown.
A Place For You To Ask Questions You've Always Wanted To Ask
From 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. each Sunday, we provide an Adult Church School class for inquiring minds and hearts. We invite you to get a cup of coffee or tea and join us “Coffee, Tea & Theology” in the Library behind our Social Hall for a lively discussion of the Lectionary for each Sunday’s sermon. We use different biblical translations as we have fun delving into the text. At the end of our time together, we sit in silence and pray for needs of each other, our church, our city, our nation and the world around us.
Monthly Holy communion
We celebrate the communion on the first Sunday of every month. All are welcome to take part in it. No need for special memberships.
To the left, directly across our Church, is the Smithfield-Liberty Garage where you may park on Sundays for only $1. Simply bring your ticket with you to Church and present it to our Welcome desk volunteer who will validate it for you.
Lunch is on us!
Service will often be followed by a light lunch, which you are invited to attend for free as a new visitor. Come hungry!
