"Abraham Lincoln in Pittsburgh, 1861"
In this re-creation, Abraham Lincoln stands on the rear platform of the train taking him from Illinois to Washington, D.C., for his 1861 inauguration. A historical marker commemorating this event is on an exterior wall of the U.S. Post Office at the corner of Federal Street and South Commons on the North Side.
Another historical marker in the city recalls an occasion when Lincoln did not come to Pittsburgh. Mounted on the Fourth Avenue wall of the YWCA (next to the Mandarin Gourmet), the plaque marks the location of Lafayette Hall and identifies it as the site of the National Republican Party's founding, February 22-23, 1856: "Lincoln was an Illinois delegate but could not attend."
