Fellowship Hike – Saturday, September 10th at 10 a.m.

Meet at the Entry Garden of Highland Park (rain or shine).

Directions: Highland Park - take N Highland Ave to the Entry Garden and park along the road that circles inside the park.  The "Super Playground" where we will meet for lunch is 7/8ths of the way around the (counter-clockwise) circle for cars.  It is near the Pittsburgh Zoo.  The 71 bus routes are your best bet if you aren't driving.

We will walk the Reservoir Loop Walk (0.76 miles - fairly flat) and take a detour for the Babbling Brook Trail (0.15 miles and flat with bathrooms at the end of that trail).

Around noon, we will end up at the Super Playground (the real name and a good description of a terrific wooden playground with picnic benches and a grill) for lunch.  Bring a sack lunch or something to grill (if you are so inclined).

Strawberry Festival 2011

Strawberry Way street signSummer truly begins in downtown Pittsburgh on the first Fridays of June when the Smithfield United Church of Christ Strawberry Festival returns to Strawberry Way with its strawberry shortcakes.

There's a process involved that makes the volunteer servers' tasks easier and keeps the line moving smoothly as customers decide what they want on their shortcake biscuit besides strawberries: a special homemade sauce? whip cream? ice cream?

The serving line leads directly to the cashier: "That will be $2.50 without ice cream, $3.00 with."

Back in the kitchen, Alecia, new to responsibility for the event, checks the pot of strawberry sauce she's keeping warm on the stove while Betty relates tales of strawberry festivals past.
