New Beginnings – Smithfield School (Chapter 1)

The sign board, reflecting the downtown buildings that are neighbors of Smithfield United Church of Christ, announces to all passers-by the opening of Smithfield School – our Christian Education program.

Extending a truly extravagant welcome are giant puppets Monkey and Sunflower.

But there is only one hand. Clearly more are needed – and more are expected:

children make hands seniors make hands
younger hands and older hands,

women make hands
women's hands, men's hands,

a family makes hands
the hands of families .

One by one they're added to the wall until

a girl sticks cut-out hand to wall

the work of many hands is done.
