The journey of growing and learning in faith never ends.
It continues for a whole lifetime.
May Smithfield School make that journey possible for you.

May 11 Smithfield School offerings ended for the summer. Classes will resume in September. Children's activities during the worship service for children pre-K through grade 3 will continue through May. All children over 2 will stay in worship during June-August. Activity bags will be provided.

Children 2 and younger are invited to our nursery during the worship service. The nursery is staffed by Anna Wade.

An ecumenical Vacation Bible School, "Camp Downtown," hosted by First Lutheran Church and supported by all of the downtown churches, will take place June 23-27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Children entering grades K-5 are invited to participate as campers; older children and adults can be counselors or volunteers. Each day, campers will enjoy stories, crafts, music, drama, and snacks relating to one of the cities in Jesus' life. In the afternoon, we will take a field trip to one of the places that makes downtown Pittsburgh special!

Brown-bag Lunch Book Club – on-going

The Book Club meets in the church library (behind the Social Hall and to the right) the last Monday of the month with a second discussion on the following Sunday during the after-service Fellowship meal for those unable to attend on a week day. The next book is b>Plan B by Anne Lamott. Note: watch for information about a change in meeting day.

We need your help

All of our Smithfield School programs rely on a dedicated team of leaders from our congregation. Here are some ways you can join them:

  • Lead an adult class. You might design a six-week class based on a special topic of interest, or offer to lead a one-time seminar on a particular subject, or follow a curriculum provided for you.
  • Work with our children. We need teachers for our elementary class, shepherds who work with all age groups during the education hour, and playtime assistants who help out with the younger children during worship. If you are interested in any of these roles, please contact Liddy Barlow
  • Pray that all Smithfield School leaders and participants grow in faith, knowledge, and love.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, or if you have another idea about a way to help, please let us know. We’ll look forward to hearing from you!

Our prayer for Smithfield School

Holy and everlasting God, God of our mothers and fathers, God of Abraham and Sarah, of Moses and Miriam, of Mary and Jesus, we have gathered this morning to learn better how to be your people. We have gathered, young and old; we have gathered, people from all parts of this city. We have gathered, people of all races, people of all backgrounds, people of diverse and varied experience. Each one of us is your child. Each one of us is filled with hope. And you know each one of us by name. Hear us now as we speak our names to you.

Lord, we ask that you guide each of our steps. We ask that you guide the nursery, where the youngest of our members will have their hearts open to you through play. We ask that you bless the preschool class, that every drop of fingerpaint and every game of dress-up be a means of drawing nearer to you. We ask that you bless the elementary school class as they begin to ask big questions and tell your story. We ask that you bless the youth group as they face the difficult task of living as disciples of Christ in a confusing world. We ask that you bless the adult classes, that women and men of all ages may collaborate together in faith. Hear us now as we name the classes we are a part of, the grade we are in or the topic we are studying.

God, you tell us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, and we are full of hopes! We ask you to make your presence known to us in our learning, in our teaching, in our discussing, in our praying. We ask for energy, we ask for guidance, we ask for your will to be done. We know that our hopes will be fulfilled and that you will work through us in ways we can only begin to imagine. Hear us now as we name our hopes for Smithfield School.

Lord, you promise to hear our prayers and you DO hear them. Thank you and thank you and thank you! Amen.

Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on us. Melt us, mold us, fill us, use us.

Donations welcomed!

Not everyone is interested in becoming a teacher or assistant in the education program, but there are other ways to help. One is by donating classroom materials. For example:

  • Wooden figures for children's chapel (see Liddy for details)
  • Simple dolls (not baby dolls) for the preschool classroom
  • Child-size, collapsible table and chairs for art activities during gym playtime
  • Beanbag chairs and other relaxing furnishings for the youth classroom
  • Gift cards to Wal-Mart, Michael's, and Staples to be used for supplies
  • Bible-based toys for our nursery; see Liddy for more details
  • 3 class sets of 20 New Revised Standard Version Bibles each
  • Bible concordance
  • Bible atlas
  • Art and craft supplies:
    1. magazines with pictures for making collages
    2. construction paper
    3. markers, colored pencils
    4. child-size scissors
    5. glue sticks, white glue, and glitter glue
  • Pillows to create a comfortable reading corner
  • Busy Bible for our nursery

If you plan to donate any of the above, please let Liddy know so the item can be removed from this list.
