At that time the population of the small village of Pittsburgh numbered around 250 people, most of whom were German. In 1787, the grandson and great-grandson of William Penn gave the little congregation a deed to the property on Smithfield Street, but no buildings were erected until 1791 because the land was so far from town; and
WHEREAS, established in 1812 and known first as the German Evangelical Protestant Church it was the first such church in the world. In 1928 English was adopted as the official language; and
WHEREAS, Smithfield United Church of Christ is a diverse congregation with members coming from across the metropolitan Pittsburgh area. The congregation maintains the philosophy of freedom of thought, open-mindedness, and respect for different beliefs; and
WHEREAS, together with Senior Minister Doug Paterson, Associate Minister Susan Cherian, and dedicated church staff and council, Smithfield United Church of Christ maintains an open, vibrant congregation joining hands, hearts, and minds to glorify God.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Luke Ravenstahl, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, congratulate the ministers and congregation of the Smithfield United Church of Christ as they celebrate the 225th Anniversary of the oldest church in the City. I do hereby declare June 3, 2007, "Smithfield United Church of Christ Day" here in our most livable City of Pittsburgh.
